COP 26

Pacote created three videos for the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, with The Water Adaptation Community.

Director, Producer, Copy editor, Video Editor: Daniel Lane
Sound & Video Editor: Rob Yeadon

The videos were shown to delegates and world leaders at the conference to raise awareness of water related climate disaster and guide them in how they can take action.

The work was done under a very tight schedule to be finalised in time for display in pavilions and events at the COP 26 in Glasgow from the 4th of November 2022 onwards

Video 1 - Mainstreaming Water Adaptation
Mainstreaming water adaptation refers to the integration of adaptation measures to address water-related challenges into policies, plans, and programs across different sectors and levels of governance. The goal is to make water adaptation a standard practice that is integrated into decision-making processes and implemented systematically.

Video 2 - Hotspots
Climate change means increasing pressure on the Earth’s system and human societies. The pressures are and will be severe and provide a cocktail of risks for people and societies and threaten livelihoods and life-supporting systems. A landscape approach is necessary - in contrast to addressing issues separately - as multiple climate related challenges interrelate in one place (droughts, floods, heatwaves, pollution etc.).

Video 3 - Communities of Practice
The WAC Community of Practice are essentially topical umbrellas that link to existing networks, projects and communities of practice all over the globe. The WAC facilitator works with each Community of Practice to continuously identify the most pressing questions and adaptation issues, and then the WAC supports their cross-learning, and knowledge brokering. The WAC invites members to take part in exchanges, webinars, e-learning and writing up their own stories and blogs.

Intel / Oracle

We worked with Freemavens on exploring the new advances of technology in one of the most remote areas of the globe: the Amazon rainforest. Speaking with congressmen, technology scientists and the local community leaders, we created a 20min online documentary to be used by Oracle and Intel in their internal communications and B2B conferences.

GLOBAL CENTER ON ADAPTATION

In collaboration with the GCA and Know Your City TV (Nairobi, Kenya), Pacote produced and edited six short films focused on building climate resilience in urban informal settlements.

KYC shot all the footage in Mukuru, while the GCA provided the script. Pacote gathered all the content, copyedited the script, added graphics, a soundtrack, and a voiceover to create a cohesive message aimed at reaching influential decision-makers in Kenya.

Overview 2m 40s

These videos highlight key lessons from the Mukuru approach and strategies for undertaking locally-led upgrading, which can then be adopted and applied in other informal settlements.

1. THE MUKURU APPROACH

A high-level overview of the Mukuru Special Planning Area (SPA). The Mukuru approach has taught us that improving climate resilience in informal settlements requires the urgent coordination of several key strategies. National and city leaders should take up this approach to building climate resilience and upgrading informal settlements.

2. COMMUNITY CO-PLANNING

Starting in 2017, residents of Mukuru, one of the largest informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya worked with the local government to plan infrastructure improvements. This included crucial investments in water, sanitation, roads, storm drains, health, and education. The SPA is an example of a true “co-planning” process.

Pacote was provided with the video and sound, which we edited together and added in graphics, soundtrack and subtitles.

The Degrees Initiative is a small NGO dedicated to putting the Global South at the centre of the solar radiation modification(SRM) conversation.
