Global Center on Adaptation

Working in conjunction with the GCA, Know Your City TV (Nairobi, Kenya) we produced and edited 6 short films about building climate resilience in urban informal settlements. These short videos highlight key lessons from the Mukuru approach and strategies for undertaking locally-led upgrading, which can then be adopted and applied in other informal settlements.

KYC were responsible for shooting all the footage in Mukuru, the GCA supplied the script and Pacote gathered all the content, tweaked the script, added graphics, a soundtrack, a voiceover - and put together a cohesive message that would be seen and heard by people who have the power to make changes in Kenya.

  1. THE MUKURU APPROACH

Overview - 2m 40s

A high-level overview of the Mukuru Special Planning Area (SPA). The Mukuru approach has taught us that improving climate resilience in informal settlements requires the urgent coordination of several key strategies. National and city leaders should take up this approach to building climate resilience and upgrading informal settlements.

Key concepts:

• The promise of and need for upgrading as a climate resilience strategy in rapidly urbanizing Africa

• The need to put communities at the center of planning

• The crucial role of local governments and locally-led action for upgrading and resilience

2. COMMUNITY CO-PLANNING

Starting in 2017, residents of Mukuru, one of the largest informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya worked with the local government to plan infrastructure improvements. This included crucial investments in water, sanitation, roads, storm drains, health, and education. The SPA is an example of a true “co-planning” process.
